 2022 Preview 


       W.S. Neal finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year W.S. Neal finished seventh in Class 4A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Eagles lost as many games as in any season since 2010. The Eagles hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they did not win a game which followed a 5-5 record in 2020.

       The offense struggled putting points on the score board as W.S. Neal averaged scoring just 12.0 points a game. The Eagles also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 36.6 points a game.

       Since 2010, W.S. Neal has gone a combined 47-77. Their 37.9% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, W.S. Neal has managed to compile a record of 114-146. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 3A and 253rd in the AHSAA.




       The Eagles will be under the direction of new head football coach Hugh Fountain as they enter the 2022 season.  Coach Fountain was the head football coach at Escambia Academy in 2021.

       Coach Fountain's overall record as a head football coach in thirty-four season stands at 253-133 (65.5%). His 253 wins rank 6th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Fountain's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-six times and won six region championships. Coach Fountain won two state championships prior to arriving at W.S. Neal, the last coming in 2017 at Escambia Academy.

       The W.S. Neal Eagles will play in Class 3A region one during the 2022 season. The Eagles may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region one this year.

       The Eagles enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 11 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at W.S. Neal will be to simply win some games.

       The Eagles open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Georgiana on Friday, August 19 at Harmond Field. Last year the Georgiana Panthers finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in eighth place in Class 1A region one. The Panthers closed out the regular season with a loss to Luverne by a score of 41-7.

       W.S. Neal and Georgiana have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 10-6-3 record against the Panthers. They last met in 1970 with W.S. Neal winning by a score of 17-14.

Thomasville scored 54 points against Gulf Shores in the first quarter of a game in 2003. They managed to hang on for an 81-14 win.
